You may not realize it, but there is a lot that goes into selecting the right table lamp! Yes, lamps are just as important as the art that hangs on the wall and the furniture that you sit on because it’s responsible for lighting the entire space. The right lamp can even serve as an accent piece that ties in the room’s whole decor. That’s why we created a guide to help you select a lamp that is both functional and stylish.
Lamp Sizing Matters
Believe it or not, the size of the lamp really matters. In fact, it should be dictated by the size of the room that you want to light. The height, shape, and width of a table lamp have to be proportional to the space in order for it to be effective. A room with lower ceilings should have a short to a medium table lamp. On the other hand, a space with high ceilings can accommodate a bigger table lamp.
The average lamp can range from 24 to 34 inches which include the shade. For smaller rooms such as den or basement room would require a table lamp approximately 20-26 inches in height. A more spacious room will need a lamp that at least 30 inches in height or more.
The size of the table that the lamp will be sitting on is another factor you should consider when shopping for the perfect table lamp. A good rule of thumb is to select a table lamp that is proportionate to the table. You should avoid using a large lamp on a small table and vice versa. A lamp should not take up all the space on the table. If you’re putting two lamps on one table, you should make sure that there is at least two to three feet between them.
The diameter of the lampshade should be twice the size of the base of the lamp’s width. You’ll know that you’ve picked the right shade when it covers the switch but shows a bit of the neck of the lamp. You can’t go wrong with a versatile lamp shade that will complement any type of decor.
