Every year there is a color of the year chosen in the month of December. This color is announced to the world as a forecast for the following year’s global color trend. It is not taken lightly, as the world all uses this color in marketing and advertisements to help stay relevant. In fact, many significant brands will use this color to help create a strong presence that year through fashion, marketing, social media, and even politics.
Who Decides the Color of the Year?
Pantone Color is known as the Global Authority of color. Each year, their team of color experts explore trends and events throughout the world and decide which color is the most represented of that year. They look for a color, which is a “snapshot” to represent that following year. It takes nearly nine months for this process to happen.
What Is the Color for 2020?
Pantone color says, “imprinted in our psyches as a restful color, Classic Blue brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser clarity…” They go on to say this is a non-aggressive color which can be favored by the universe.
Why Is It Called “Classic Blue?”
Last year’s color was Living Coral. As mentioned early, Pantone’s color experts traveled the world and chose a color they have noted to be most represented of that year. However, Living Coral upset a large group of individuals. This is because the color name suggests that coral is in a lively and vibrant state, whereas this is far from true. Many of Australia’s coral reefs are dying at an alarming rate. The once beautiful pink and orange reefs are manly gray and dull now. This is an extreme concern. Because Pantone colors duty is to represent the actual times, last year’s color choice had an intense backlash.
It is believed that Classic Blue was chosen as a safe choice this year. A recent survey done suggested that 43% of people consider Classic Blue to be reliable, 34% associate it with trust, while 28% think this is a color of security. It is believed that this color was chosen for the people. Remember, they can put whatever adjectives they would like in front of the color. They did not select Sky Blue or Midnight Blue, yet they chose the word “Classic.” Every color has a slightly different psychological meaning and influence. Classic Blue seems to be a safe choice that does not insinuate anything more than what it is.
So, what does all this color talk mean to you? Well, Classic Blue is going to be very powerful in marketing and sales. If you are looking to keep your home trendy or business with the rest of the industry leaders, you will want to incorporate this color. Since Classic Blue is a very passive and tranquil color, it will work great with your design and help keep your spirt grounded and peaceful.
